Zelenskyy issues fresh appeal for air defences after Dnipro strikes

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated his call for modern air defence systems and the approval of long-range strikes on Russia - as the number of people killed in Moscow's strike on Dnipro rises to five.

The Ukrainian president said at least 34 people have also been injured in the missile and drone attacks on the city.

"Only two things can stop this Russian terror - modern air defence systems and the long range of our weapons," he wrote in a post on social media.

"The world can protect lives, and it requires the determination of leaders. Determination that can and must make security against terror the norm again."

Russian minister condemns Pentagon for saying Kyiv can strike Crimea with US weapons

Russia's deputy foreign minister has criticised the Pentagon after it said Ukraine could strike Russian-occupied Crimea with long-range weapons.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder told a briefing yesterday that Kyiv's troops could strike the peninsula with long-range missiles provided by the US as it was considered part of Ukraine.

Sergei Ryabkov said the statement had the potential to expand the conflict, according to the Russian TASS news agency.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. The region serves as the headquarters of its Black Sea Fleet, which has been targeted in a series of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes.

Russia claims to take control of district in key frontline town

Russian forces have taken control of a district in the key frontline town of Chasiv Yar, the Russian news agency Interfax reports, citing the country's defence ministry.

A strategically important town in the eastern Donetsk region, Chasiv Yar has long been a Russian target.

It has been pummelled by Russian air, artillery and drone strikes for months now, with both sides viewing the town as a gateway for Russia to launch direct offensives against other key Ukrainian cities.

Chasiv Yar lies around 20 km (12 miles) west of Bakhmut, a town seized by Russian forces a year ago after months of brutal battle.

One killed and four injured in latest Russian strikes on Kharkiv

One person has been killed and another four are injured after Russian attacks in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, local authorities have said.

Regional prosecutors said an attack on the village of Borova left a man dead and two people hurt, while damaging homes, shops and an administrative building.

A further two people were wounded in a missile strike on the village of Ruska Lozova, it said.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said last month that Russia had intensified attacks near Borova as its forces attempted to strike logistics and find weaknesses in Ukraine's defence.

Russian forces launched a new ground attack on Kharkiv in May, opening a new front in a war that had long been focused on the east and south.

No dialogue between Russia and Trump on war - report

Russia and Donald Trump are not engaged in talks on the war in Ukraine, Russian media is reporting, citing the Kremlin.

Mr Trump said in a debate with Joe Biden last week that he could end the conflict before taking office in January if he won the November election.

He has repeatedly asserted that he could quickly settle the conflict.

The Kremlin said it could not comment on his proposals for peace without knowing the details.

A top aide to Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier that Ukraine wasn't prepared to compromise and give up territory to Russia to end the war (see 8.50 post).
