Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Classic Literature) for Thursday, January 25, 2024 (Season 40, Game 99):

An intended sequel to this 1869 work centered on the Decembrists, a group of veterans who largely served in the Napoleonic Wars

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Alec Chao, a management & program analyst originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Today's Final Jeopardy - Thursday, January 25, 2024 (1)
Connor Sears, a copy editor from Queens, New York
Today's Final Jeopardy - Thursday, January 25, 2024 (2)
Johanna Stoberock, an adjunct professor & fiction writer from Walla Walla, Washington
Today's Final Jeopardy - Thursday, January 25, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is quarterfinal #8 of Group 1 of Champions Wildcard, as the number of players who could still win the 31st Tournament of Champions sits at 67. By the end of this game, we’ll be down to 65 contenders, as Johanna Stoberock, Connor Sears, and Alec Chao do battle today. Most people will see Connor as the favorite to win this one by virtue of his two games won, but Johanna’s and Alec’s stats are much better than their single wins might indicate!

Leo Tolstoy’s famed novel War and Peace was originally intended to be a trilogy—The Decembrists was the originally-planned second part of the trilogy, about the Decembrist Uprising of 1825 in Russia. Unfortunately, it is now believed that Tolstoy lost interest in the project when he was denied access to the court proceedings, as it meant that he was unable to research the uprising with the same thoroughness that he was able to research the Napoleonic Wars.

The first three chapters of The Decembrists were published in 1884.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I think Johanna should have listened more to her bridge friends.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Alec $15,400 Connor $14,600 Johanna $7,600)

Johanna: Your choice here is dependent on whether you think Connor will make a small bet or a large one. If you think he’s going to bet small, then bet at least $6,400 to defend against his entire range. If you think he’ll make a large bet, then bet less than $6,000 to stay ahead of Alec if he misses Final. (Actual bet: $6,201)

Connor: Standard cover bet over Johanna is $601. I wouldn’t bet more than this here as this forces Johanna into a large bet to stay in contention. (Actual bet: $801)

Alec: Standard cover bet over Connor is $13,801. (Actual bet: $13,801)
